De Curaçao Art Circle is een non-profit organisatie die zich sinds 1935 bezighoudt met het organiseren van muziek- dans-, theater- en andere kunstevenementen op Curacao. De laatste jaren heeft de Art Circle zich beperkt tot het organiseren van concerten en muziektheater omdat de andere disciplines op eigen wijze hun evenementen vorm geven. Waar mogelijk faciliteren we extra voorstellingen voor kansarme groepen.

Press release: Kinteto Calmes Art Jazz

The upcoming concert of the Curaçao Art Circle is Kinteto Calmes Art Jazz.
The quintet performs compositions by Eric Calmes, winner of the 1986 Podium Prize, featuring vibrant polyrhythmic pieces from his album Kaya Grandi as well as later work. Eric says: “A good melody is important, because it helps listeners follow and remember your music. You shouldn’t shy away from that. Contemporary jazz is often written in such a complex way. I basically write simple themes based on folk music. I then refine them, add more chords, but the starting point remains an appealing melody.”
Calmes is known for compositions such as Kaya Grandi, Shi Maria, Seru Pretu, Su solo ta grandi, and Boka Samí.
The quintet will also perform work by Emilio “Micho” Prudencia, the father of master musician Erwin “Win” Prudencia. And for fans of J.S. Bach, the quintet has a surprise in store.

In addition to Eric Calmes—composer and central figure—on bass, the quintet consists of Chris Wallé on Rhodes and keyboard, Pernell Saturnino on percussion, Lonte Conradus on drums, and Dennis Aalse on trumpet.

Why is the Curaçao Art Circle (the international name of the Kunstkring) organizing the Kinteto Calmes Art Jazz concert? It falls outside the organization’s traditional classical focus—for two, or actually three, reasons.
First, they want to reach a broader audience than in their 90-year history so far, including younger people and more diverse segments of society. Second, while jazz as a term is relatively recent, the joy of improvising with notes and chords dates back to the time of Johann Sebastian Bach. The name jazz may be new, but Bach is a major source of inspiration for many jazz compositions. Finally, the concert is also part of their 90th anniversary celebration, which began in 2025 with the Calypso Goes Classic concert by Konkie Halmeijer, in which Eric also participated as a double bassist and marimbula player.

There will be a performance on Saturday, April 11 at 5:00 PM and another on Sunday, April 12 at 10:00 AM. The concert lasts approximately two hours, including an intermission.

The performances take place in the auditorium of Habaai, Huize Welgelegen. Tickets cost 70 guilders (including a non-alcoholic drink and a snack) and are available via the Caribbean Ticketshop or at Mensing’s Caminada and Van den Tweel sales points. Tickets for youth are 25 guilders (until 21 years).

Filmavond met "MASS: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers" van Leonard Bernstein - Landhuis Bloemhof (zat. 23/8)
Curaçao Art Circle organiseerde vanwege het 90-jarig bestaan speciaal voor de leden en geïnteresseerden een vertoning van een videoregistratie van "Mass" van Leonard Bernstein. "Mass" van Leonard Bernstein is “A Theatre piece for Singers, Players and Dancers”, geschreven in 1971 voor de opening van het John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Het was de tijd van Jesus Christ Superstar, Woodstock en het uittreden van veel geestelijken. In "Mass", met meer dan 200 zangers, instrumentalisten en acteurs, volgen we de innerlijke strijd van de hoofdrolspeler, de Celebrant, in een melange van liturgische muziek in het Latijn, klassiek, jazz, folk, blues, rock en musical. Kevin Carthy gaf een inleiding bij de vertoning.
